About Torquay

Torquay is the largest town in the Surf Coast Shire and marks the beginning of the gazette Great Ocean Road. Torquay is the Eastern coastal gateway to the Great Ocean Road region and is characterised by the surf culture with iconic Bells Beach located nearby and the birthplace of world-renowned surf brands such as Quicksilver and Rip Curl.

Torquay’s population has grown significantly in recent year with over 19,000 residents living in Torquay and nearby Jan Juc. It is a 30 minute drive from central Geelong and home to a growing business sector and community amenity.

The peak local tourism body representing the visitor economy in Torquay is Commerce Torquay, who have a commercial destination partnership with Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism.

The Torquay Brand

Torquay is a story of saltwater wellness. Salty air, sandy hair, the thrill of answering the call of the ocean. It’s about reconnection, reinvigoration and rediscovering the quintessential Australian surf culture.

We’re a place where people work in the day but surf at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s where you let your hair down and let nature have its way. It’s where you create your own way to live. It’s where our surf will lead you astray.

We don’t live to work, we work to live.

Destination Partnership

A commercial destination partnership is in place between Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism and Commerce Torquay. 20% of investment from Torquay businesses in the Great Ocean Road official marketing program is made available for Commerce Torquay to spend on local visitor economy objectives.
